Aspen Mountain Katahdin Sheep

Katahdin - Hair SheepKatahdin Rams

Katahdins are a single purpose sheep - MEAT.  The meat is tender and delicately flavored, yet naturally lean.  They are a haired sheep. Unlike wooled breeds, they have no lanolin or wool next to their skin. Lambs produce a high quality, well-muscled carcass.

Katahdin Sheep Are Hardy and Adaptive

LmabKatahdins shed their winter coat as days grow longer in spring and no shearing is required.  Because of their shedding coat, they adapt to any climate whether hot and humid or very cold at high elevations.  Our elevation here is over 6,000 feet and the sheep prefer to be outdoors rather than in a barn or shed regardless of frost.

The lambing is extremely easy and Katahdins are excellent and protective mothers.  Lambs are born knowing where the udder is and newborns don't need help nursing.

Katahdins are nonseasonal breeders and are capable of lambing early or late in the year, as the breeder chooses.Llama

Katahdins Are Low Maintanence Sheep

Katahdins have a parasite tolerance that eliminates much of the deworming work.  They are low management sheep.

Katahdins naturally have medium length tails and do not need to be docked.  Because of their short hair coat in summer, there are no fly problems.

Katahdin ewes are well-suited as a base in a terminal-sire crossbreeding program to produce market lambs.
